Alberta’s Solar Rebates And Incentives?

What are commercial solar rebates and incentives?

Governments provide financial incentives for solar system installations. These incentives reduce investment costs by promoting cleaner energy use, energy independence, job creation, and lower carbon emissions. This helps make solar power more affordable and attractive for businesses.

Alberta Solar Rebate Program

This program offers rebates of up to $250,000 per project, with a maximum of $500,000 per business. It supports energy efficiency projects, including solar installations, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost economic activity.

Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP)

The Alberta municipalities’ CEIP program offers up to 100% financing for clean energy projects, including solar, with up to 20-year repayment terms through property tax bills.

It features competitive interest rates, no penalty for early repayment, and up to a 10% project cost incentive. The financing is attached to the property, not the owner, allowing transfer upon sale.

Accelerated Investment Incentive (AII)

AII allows businesses to claim accelerated Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) on eligible property, enabling faster deduction of investment costs. This applies to property acquired after November 20, 2018, and used before 2028. It includes commercial buildings, vehicles, and tools, but excludes classes 54, 55, and 56.

Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit

This tax credit supports investments in clean energy projects by offering Canadian corporations a refundable tax credit of up to 30% for the capital cost of eligible solar and other clean energy equipment.

This applies to equipment purchased and used from March 28, 2023, to 2034 after that the tax credit decreases to 15%.

Alberta Municipal Solar Program (AMSP):

AMSP provides municipalities with solar PV system rebates up to $0.90 per watt, capped at $300,000 per project. The program is not taking any more applications since all the money has already been given out.

Funding was distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Municipalities that have submitted Expressions of Interest will be notified if the program starts accepting applications again.

Clean Electricity Investment Tax Credit

The Clean Electricity Investment Tax Credit offers a refundable 15% tax credit on renewable energy investments’ capital costs for non-taxable entities like Indigenous communities and municipally owned utilities.

Eligibility extends to Canadian corporations meeting specific labor and category requirements under Bill C-59, which is still under review. The credit reduces to 5% if labor conditions aren’t met.

Clean Energy Improvement Program

Opened on June 7, 2022, the Clean Energy Improvement Program offers financing for energy efficiency or renewable energy projects in Edmonton. Tax bills can help property owners get good rates and pay them back over 20 years. This project aims to make at least three improvements, helping the city reach its net-zero emissions goal by 2050.
