Edmonton & Alberta homeowners, don’t miss out: the Canada Greener Homes Loan (CGHL) is closing soon. If you’ve been waiting to upgrade your home (or business) with solar, insulation, or heat pumps and want interest-free financing, now’s the time to act.
What’s Changing & Why It Matters
Natural Resources Canada has announced that the last day to submit applications for the CGHL is October 1, 2025.
After that date, applications will no longer be accepted. Importantly, submitting by October 1 doesn’t automatically guarantee approval or funding — the program will live on only until funds are fully allocated.
Key Features of the Canada Greener Homes Loan
| Feature | Details |
| Loan amount | From $5,000 up to $40,000 interest-free |
| Repayment period | Up to 10 years |
| What you can finance | Eligible retrofit work recommended by an EnerGuide pre-retrofit evaluation—examples include solar panels, heat pumps, insulation, efficient windows/doors. But you must not have already started the retrofit. |
| Pre-retrofit evaluation required | Yes. Must be completed and submitted before application. The evaluation cost is borne by the homeowner. |
What You Need to Do If You’re Considering Application
If you’re in Alberta (or anywhere in Canada), and you want to take advantage of this program, here’s what you should do now. Time is short.
- Talk to an energy advisor and arrange for your pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation. Since the evaluation must be submitted before application, don’t delay.
- Review your retrofit plans carefully. Only retrofits recommended in the pre-retrofit report are eligible, and work must not have yet begun. Contracts for work signed and retrofits started may disqualify you.
- Secure quotes for the retrofit work (solar, insulation, etc.) so you know what the cost will be.
- Apply by October 1, 2025 with all required documentation. Even then, approval isn’t guaranteed — applications will be processed in the order received until funding is gone.

What This Means for Solar Projects in Edmonton & Alberta
For those considering solar panels in Edmonton or commercial solar installations, here are some implications:
- The ability to access an interest-free loan up to $40,000 can significantly reduce the upfront cost of installing solar panels, especially for smaller businesses or homes.
- Because the loan is unsecured and interest-free, the financial burden is much lighter than many financing alternatives.
- If you’re combining solar with other retrofits (e.g. insulation, heat pumps), the program helps bundle those so you get broader home performance improvements.
- For commercial solar: note the loan is geared to residential retrofits (home-owners, primary residence), so if your project is strictly commercial (multi-unit, businesses not living onsite), be sure to check eligibility or other programs.
