Meet Randall Benson : Founder & CEO, Gridworks Energy

Randall Benson, an Indigenous entrepreneur proudly of Cree, Iroquois, and Métis heritage, was born in Fort McMurray, Alberta, and raised both in the community and the surrounding wilderness, deeply influenced by traditional values.

Randall Benson Early Career

Randall discovered his passion for renewable energy and specifically solar power in the late 1990s while working in Alberta’s Oilsands.

Convinced early on that solar would become a crucial industry, he pursued extensive education and training, earning his Master Electrician certification and a Power Engineering Technologist diploma. With a Bachelor of Arts degree as his academic foundation, Randall has cultivated a career dedicated to advancing solar energy across Canada.

In 2000, Randall formally launched into solar energy work, initially balancing traditional electrical contracting roles.

By 2005, driven by an increasing demand for solar solutions, he fully committed himself to renewable energy. He founded Off The Grid Renewable Energy Power Systems, which evolved into Gridworks Energy Group Inc. in 2010.

Since then, Randall and his dedicated team have successfully completed diverse projects, from residential installations to large-scale solar arrays and EV infrastructure.

Recognized Solar Expert in Alberta

As a recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME), Randall actively contributes to industry standards and certifications, including working closely on the CSA Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems Certification (SPVC – NOC 7241).

His expertise is regularly sought by governmental agencies, major media outlets, and industry stakeholders, reflecting his leadership and respected voice in renewable energy development.

Randall’s passion for sharing knowledge led him to create one of Canada’s first comprehensive solar PV design and construction training programs in 2009.

He currently serves on the board of directors for Women Building Futures (WBF) and maintains active affiliations with CCIB, Aksis, SESA, and ECAA.

Beyond Solar

When Randall isn’t leading industry advancements or mentoring future solar leaders, he remains committed to advocating for sustainable living, community development, and promoting Indigenous entrepreneurship across Alberta and beyond.
